It’s why I risked life and limb shooting car rallies and motorsports. However, I’ve always hated the hoops that the showroom environment forces you to jump through. During my time in car sales, I saw how frustrated clients could be with the process. I decided there must be a better way. Message in a Bottle (known within Lions as MIAB) helps emergency services personnel to save valuable time in identifying an individual very quickly and knowing if they have any allergies or take special medication. Paramedics, police, fire-fighters and social services support this Lions life-saving initiative and know to look in the fridge when they see the Message in a Bottle stickers, supplied. The initiative provides peace of mind that prompt and appropriate medical assistance can be provided, and next of kin / emergency contacts can be notified. How to obtain a Message in a Bottle Members of the public and other organisations can obtain a Message in a Bottle kit by contacting their local Lions club More than 6 million Message in a Bottle kits has been distributed by Lions Clubs International (MD105) British Isles to people with conditions such as diabetes, allergies, disabilities and life-threatening illnesses. Clubs are able to provide Message in a Bottle within their local communities free of charge thanks to fund-raising and generous donations from the public and businesses. It is not just vulnerable people who benefit from Message in a Bottle. Anyone with health conditions could have an accident at home. The Message in a Bottle... --- Participation in our Online Race Night is via Zoom which you probably view using your laptop. Not a very practical option if the whole family are taking part. You can however display the whole event on your flatscreen TV by connecting laptop and TV using an HDMI cable and twiddling with the laptop's settings. First of all you need to tell the laptop to display the same screen on the TV. There is usually a tickbox to mirror the display to the TV or share the same screen on both. Once that is done you can turn your attention to the audio. The laptop will by now have detected the television and offer it as an alternative for the incoming sound. You will now only need the laptop screen for downloading the betting slip from the QR code dispayed on the screen. We look forward to seeing you on the night. --- Buy a number in our Share a Square raffle for £5 and be eligible to win a first prize of £150, a second prize of £50 or a third prize of £25. Choose a number from 1-100. All numbers are only sold once. Go to the Numbers Raffle page This raffle complies with the requirements of the Gambling Commission for charities and is licenced by Selby District Council. --- SALES HAVE NOW CLOSED AND THE DRAW WILL TAKE PLACE TOMORROW If you are familiar with Elmet Lions you will know that we organise fundraising events which aim to provide enjoyable entertainment value while raising money for charities, local organisations and international beneficiaries supported by our foundation, LCIF. Such events have proved impossible to hold during lockdown and have left us wondering what we can do to raise money for good causes. The next event on our calendar would have been the Easter Egg Raffle where a dozen or more local pubs would sell raffle tickets on our behalf to win a giant Easter Egg. Pubs are of course closed at the moment. We are therefore going to put this event online and will offer a total of five baskets of Easter Eggs in five separate online raffles, each one to benefit a nominated charity. We will share the net profit from these raffles with each of them. To take part just follow the directions to the Shop and decide which charity or charities you are going to support by buying a ticket. On Good Friday we will select five winners and deliver their Eggs on Friday or Saturday to their addresses if they are in Sherburn, South Milford, Barkston Ash, Hillam & Monk Fryston, Ulleskelf, Saxton, Church Fenton or Burton Salmon. Any winner from outside that area will be invited to collect their Egg from a Club member. --- Tickets will be sold online for a face value of £1. 30 each via the Shop on our website. There are five raffles, each one benefitting a different local charity which will receive half of the net profit from the raffle, the other half being paid into Elmet Lions Club (CIO) charity account. The prize Eggs will be as displayed on the website. Elmet Lions reserve the right to substitute another Egg of equivalent value. There is no cash alternative. The five prizes will be delivered to the winners home address within the area of Sherburn, South Milford, Barkston Ash, Hillam & Monk Fryston, Ulleskelf, Saxton, Church Fenton or Burton Salmon. Any winner from outside that area will be invited to collect their prize from a Club member. The Raffle will be operated within the rules of the UK Gambling Commission for charity raffles. A licence to operate the Raffle has been obtained from Selby District Council. There are more than 20 in the Sherburn and Elmet district, mostly in pubs but schools and churches too. The Easter Egg raffle is one of the fundraising campaigns that we run throughout the year, which include Santa's sleigh in December, cake stalls at local fairs, an inter-pub quiz competition (100 questions in 30 minutes) and a Race night held last year in Church Fenton village hall. All these events raise money for our Charity account from which we make donations to local, national and international causes. In addition there was a raffle of attractive prizes donated by local companies and organisations, which included wine, spirits, a taster flight from Sherburn Aero Club and a top of the range gas-powered barbeque. The night raised approximately eight hundred pounds, some of which was later donated to Church Fenton Communiy shop towards a coffee machine. Inter-pub quiz About a dozen local pubs competed in this quiz which comprises a 100 questions which must be aswered in 30 minutes. The quiz takes place at the same time in all competing pubs and the winner is declared as soon as possible after the quiz finishes. Two trophies are awarded; one for the pub which answered the most question in the shortest time and a second one for the pub which raised the most money for our charity funds. Santa's sleigh During December Santa's sleigh tours the district and its villages giving children the opportunity to pass on their wishlist to the white-bearded one. Your Name (required) Your Email (required) Your phone number (required) Subject Your Message Δ --- As we are suported by our local community our first priority for donations and support is that same local community. However we are part of an international organisation of Lions Clubs and will also offer our assistance nationally and internationally. When we make an international donation we will generally do this via our Lions Cubs International Foundation (LCIF) as we know that any funds we send abroad will be provided to like-minded members of local or neighbouring Lions clubs. This means that we can assure any UK donors about the local arrangements for disaster relief. Unlike the Red Cross or other organisations whose sole purpose is disaster relief and who are obliged to pull out of an area by their own charter after immediate disaster relief, LCI is "in it for the long run". You will therefore find that Yorkshire Lions are still supplying schoolbooks to Sri Lanka more than a decade after the Tsunami struck, while neighbouring Lions clubs across the border are still at work in Haiti. Elmet Lions Club CIO --- - Categories: Defying gravity colour run We were delighted to support the above-mentioned special day celebrated by Sherburn Hungate Primary School and to receive the letter detailed below:- "Last friday was the most special day. It could not have been any better. The sun shone, the prizes were collected, the paint arrived and the colours were all around us. We as a school loved our celebration day to remember Emilia, raise vital funds for her charity and for Therapy Dogs Nationwide who have supported us as a school since February.     Without the support of everyone in this email, the day would simply have not been possible. The gratitude we have as a school to you all can never be matched and due to your time, donations, prizes and general support we have managed to create a special day and raise an incredible amount of money. We are still adding it up now!     To make the day finish in style, the first name drawn out of the raffle was Emilia's best friend. She chose the two tickets to see Wicked live in London so that she could experience the joy that show brought to Emilia. I believe that someone up there had an influence on that draw!   I have attached a link to a video which shows a little of how our day went, why we did what we did and just a thank you note for all of you to have.   https://drive. google. com/file/d/1kvqiCXdAFzm7qi4ZmPGW7G0LIITO3e9t/view? usp=share_link   You really helped us show the meaning of 'For Good'.... --- - Categories: MJF award to Lion Andrew Club Treasurer and charter member Lion Andrew Oxtoby has tonight received a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. You may well choose to have your online donations managed by an organisation such as JustGiving who claim the GA on your behalf from HMRC. There is a cost involved ( a monthly fee and net GA of 20% instead of 25%). Where you receive online donations via contactless card readers you often don’t receive donors’ details necessary for a GA claim. . Similarly where you operate bucket collections at an event or have collection cans located for example in a pub, you miss out on GiftAid. You do however have the opportunity to make a claim direct to HMRC. You can read how to do this at https://www. gov. uk/claim-gift-aid-online Where individual donations are £30 or less there is a special scheme called Gift Aid small donations scheme (GASDS) for such claims. Organisations which are not registered charities can still claim GiftAid. You would need to register your organisation with HMRC and provide information which established your credentials with them. Here’s a link which provides information on that aspect of GiftAid. - https://www. gov. uk/claim-gift-aid/small-donations-scheme I trust this information will prove useful to registered and unregistered charities. We were grateful to receive a donation to our charity account in return for our efforts. --- - Categories: what we did during lockdown - Tags: laundry bags, ppe, scrubs The first lockdown meant that we could no longer operate as we usually did, running fundraising events for various causes and making donations to them. This was recognised throughout the UK Lions organisation and our UK Headquarters decided to make grants available for lockdown-related projects. We applied for such a grant and received £1,000 towards our proposal to supply scrubs to local care homes, hospitals and other care-related organisations. We first registered with the national Scrubs website (scrubhub. org), took advice on sources of fabric supply and the required sewing patterns and set about recruiting experienced volunteer sewers to make scrubs, laundry bags and related products. To date we have supplied:- Wash bags Meadow Lodge Care Home Services Selby Hospital Hilltop Manor - Sherburn in Elmet Scrubs Wakefield Hospital Harrogate Hospital Selby Hospital York Hospital Over the duration of the first lockdown when the shortage of PPE was a major issue. We also raised funds from donations made through our website amounting to a further £125 and added further funds from our own charity account. We have been taking the sleigh round for over 20 years, however this year Covid19 and all its associated Health and Safety and risk of infection beat us. We care about you – we care about us – we care not to spread this virus. Our apologies – we will be back in 2021 – bigger, bolder, better and brighter! Watch this space! Meetings We met one of the challenges of meeting regularly by holding virtual meetings on Zoom. Whilst we miss the face to face contact of a real meeting, the virtual meetings can be formed, quickly, easily and from the comfort of our own homes. This is what we did when we read that some of the pubs in the area were rising to the challenge of feeding children over half term. An emergency meeting was held and within 10 minutes we had agreed to fund 100 meals over the half term. Job done quickly and easily. Our picture shows Elmet Lions (all looking very bandit-like with face coverings! ) with Carol from The Wheatsheaf in Sherburn assembling the dinners for collection/delivery.
