How to donate to Elmet Lions at no cost to you
If you buy from Amazon they have a scheme whereby 0.5% of the value of your order will be donated to a registered charity of your choice.
Instead of visiting amazon.co.uk go to smile.amazon.co.uk and choose Elmet Lions (CIO), then go ahead and make your purchase in the usual way. You will receive your purchase for the usual price and we will receive that charity donation.
Thanks for you support.
Joint presentation to Hungate Primary School with Wincanton and Sainsbury’s
We have teamed up with Wincanton Logistics and Sainsbury’s to jointly present a cheque for £1,200 to Hungate Primary School, which will provide new books and a reading programme for their library. Here we are – socially distanced – presenting the cheque with our very own Elmet Lion !!

Providing 50 Christmas dinners to local residents

For more information or to request a Christmas dinner call Sue at the Sherburn Visiting Scheme on 10977 681828.
Meals will be delivered from 12 o’clock on Christmas Day.
Scouts’ Christmas collection
We read about the toy appeal from Sherburn Scouts who are distributing to families in the area. We have gone out and bought presents for all age groups. They’ll be dropped off at the Scout Hut in the day. Hope it makes the children happy at Christmas

Been to drop our gifts off at the Scouts hut . Must say they have done really well with their collection. Well done!

Flu jab marshalling
When South Milford Surgery decided to operate a drive through Flu vaccination service at Sherburn Aero Club in October a number of Lions volunteered to act as marshalls. You’ll be pleased to know we weren’t given anything sharp or pointed to deal with but we did help with the smooth running of this week-long event.
We were grateful to receive a donation to our charity account in return for our efforts.

What did we do during the first Covid Lockdown?
The first lockdown meant that we could no longer operate as we usually did, running fundraising events for various causes and making donations to them.
This was recognised throughout the UK Lions organisation and our UK Headquarters decided to make grants available for lockdown-related projects. We applied for such a grant and received £1,000 towards our proposal to supply scrubs to local care homes, hospitals and other care-related organisations.
We first registered with the national Scrubs website (scrubhub.org), took advice on sources of fabric supply and the required sewing patterns and set about recruiting experienced volunteer sewers to make scrubs, laundry bags and related products.
To date we have supplied:-
Wash bags
Meadow Lodge Care Home Services
Selby Hospital
Hilltop Manor – Sherburn in Elmet
Scrubs
Wakefield Hospital
Harrogate Hospital
Selby Hospital
York Hospital
Over the duration of the first lockdown when the shortage of PPE was a major issue.
We also raised funds from donations made through our website amounting to a further £125 and added further funds from our own charity account.
Here are some of the photos we took relating to this project:-

Santa, Zoom meetings and Children’s meals
Santa’s sleigh
This is a very challenging year for everyone we know, however none was the bigger challenge than deciding not to run the Santa Sleigh around Sherburn and surrounding villages.
We have been taking the sleigh round for over 20 years, however this year Covid19 and all its associated Health and Safety and risk of infection beat us. We care about you – we care about us – we care not to spread this virus.

Our apologies – we will be back in 2021 – bigger, bolder, better and brighter! Watch this space!
Meetings
We met one of the challenges of meeting regularly by holding virtual meetings on Zoom. Whilst we miss the face to face contact of a real meeting, the virtual meetings can be formed, quickly, easily and from the comfort of our own homes.

This is what we did when we read that some of the pubs in the area were rising to the challenge of feeding children over half term. An emergency meeting was held and within 10 minutes we had agreed to fund 100 meals over the half term. Job done quickly and easily.
Our picture shows Elmet Lions (all looking very bandit-like with face coverings!) with Carol from The Wheatsheaf in Sherburn assembling the dinners for collection/delivery.

The pictures are courtesy of True North Photography run by Mark Hillyer who did an amazing photo shoot for us. Check him out at www.mjhstudio.co.uk

Supporting the community
Two causes were brought to our attention during October, 2020 and it fulfilled our desire to support the uniformed organisations in the area.
Alex Richardson is a Sherburn Scout who has been selected to go to the International Jamboree in Poland next year (should have been this year, but this pesky virus postponed it!) and he is raising funds to get him there by riding a static exercise bike the amount of miles for Sherburn to Poland. Elmet Lions have stepped in and helped with a donation to help him on his way. Great work Alex – keep pedalling!
The other is the formation of Rainbows and Brownies in South Milford who needed help with set up costs. Again Elmet Lions have stepped in with a donation which will go towards overheads and also activities.
Looking forward
If you have a cause that you feel we could help you with please do let us know. Paul Croll (President) is always keen to hear from people paulcroll@hotmail.co.uk or contact Maggie Hartley (Vice President) bigmagsin@gmail.com
