Sherburn Gala cake stall and tug of war contest

We recently took part in the Sherburn Gala where we had a cake stall offering a range of tasty cakes from a supplier who counts Harrods of Knightsbridge among their customers.

Here’s what Lions David Jones and Pauline Croft were selling before a heavy downpour turned our gazebo into an impromptu refuge for as many visitors who could cram themselves under cover.

We also arranged a charity tug-of-war contest with four teams participating, two men’s and two women’s teams, each from the Oddfellows pub and Sherburn Gymnastics Club.

In a best of three contests which all went to the wire, Sherburn Gymnastics club won both times. This won them the £100 cash prize for a cause of their choice, which not surprisingly was their gymnastics club. The Oddfellows teams generously gave their £50 runners up prize to Sherburn Gymnastics, although the club’s Captain Jack Sparrow looked every bit as dodgy as Johnny Depp.

New mowers for local church

All Saints Church in Sherburn recently appealed for help with the purchase of new mowers for their graveyard. A generous sponsor provided the fund for a new ride-on mower while Elmet Lions contributed £350 to the more modest cost of a smaller mower for grass cutting around individual graves. Our photo shows the vicar Chris Wilton and gardener Roy Mytom showing the new mower to Lion President Ann Hudson, Lions David Jones, Pauline Croft and Paul Croll and Councillor David Buckle.

Sherburn Community Gymnastics Club

In February of this year we were approached by Sherburn Community Gymnastics Club (SCGC) with a request to support their efforts in respect of the fledgling club. We decided to provide the money needed to obtain a vaulting box and were pleased to attend the official opening by Nile Wilson and hand over a cheque for £395

Inter pub quiz second trophy presentation

We briefly interrupted the regular Monday night pub quiz at the Oddfellows, Sherburn on the 14th November to present our second trophy from the inter-pub quiz.

This time it was for the pub which raised the most money towards the quiz event and once again it was the Oddfellows who were winners. They raised £215.05 of the total amount of £830.

Our photo shows Lions club President Ann Hudson presenting the trophy to landlady Gemma Stead, looked on by the pub’s own quizmaster Ephraim Dainbrook and landlord James Stead.

This year’s quiz was the first of what we hope will be a regular annual feature in our calendar.

We are grateful for the support of local landlords, their customers and our supporters who helped out on the night.

Inter pub quiz

Friday, 28th October we held our first inter-pub quiz in Sherburn and surrounding villages, with ten pubs taking part.

The format was 100 questions answered in thirty minutes, with the winners being the team that answered the most questions in the shortest time. Like Mastermind, we also took into account passes where scores were equal.

The trophy for the winning team went to the Oddfellows with a score of 67. Here’s a picture of Club President Ann Hudson presenting it. The camera’s flash seems to have added a topical spooky Hallowe’en look to the photo!

A second trophy will be presented to the pub which raises the most money towards the Defibrillator Fund. So far we have collected £498.47 from four pubs and are awaiting the collection buckets from the rest.

Thanks to all the pubs which took part and all who helped us run this highly successful event on the night.

We’ll be publishing the timetable for Santa’s sleigh visits to the various local villages shortly.

In the meantime though we want to tell you about our latest innovation. You’ll have heard of Santa’s little helpers. This year we’ve recruited Santa’s litte tracker.

You will be able to track Santa amd see where he is on a dedicated website as he progresses around your village.

More details to follow nearer the date.

2017 Sherburn Craft Fair

On Tuesday, 4th October we attended a public meeting called to gauge the interest in running a craft fair over the 2017 August Bank Holiday. The room in the Eversley Park Centre was full and the people enthusiastic about such an event. In part it is meant to replace the Cawood event which closed after 35 years when the land on which it was held was sold.

The outcome of the meeting was that a chairman, secretary and treasurer were elected and one lady offered to help establish the fair as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in order to limit the organisers` liability.

Various people offered their services in respect of their expertise such as managing stalls, publicity and promotions, event website. Of particular benefit is the involvement of David (?), one of Cawood’s organisers.

Running the weekend is expected to cost about £50K with income coming from any grants that might be available from the parish council, sponsorship from businesses, stall rentals and admission charges (‘£5 per person for all three days, children free’ were suggested). Profit has been estimated at £30-£40K.

A celebrity will be invited to open the event. People were asked to suggest acts that could perform on the stage as a different programme is planned for each day.

We are going to discuss within our club how best we can support this event.

The next public meeting is planned for November 8th at 7:30pm, same venue.
